OPAT service models can contribute considerably to the timely and appropriate discharge of patients who require antimicrobial therapy for the management of serious infections. Despite evidence of improved patient satisfaction, reduced bed occupancy and reduction in HCAIs, decisions to discharge patients on antibiotics – be they parenteral or oral – have been hindered by the absence of a framework through which healthcare professionals (HCPs) can identify patients suitable for early discharge. A paper is due for publication in the Journal of Animicrobial Chemotherapy in March 2012 that identifies and provides evidence for such a framework. A link to the paper will be provided here as soon as it is available.
